How do you encourage creative thinking within your department?
“Through thoughtful sharing of ideas. One of the great parts of my job is I get to travel between our Pewaukee and Madison offices. However, having a team in two different locations can sometimes be a challenge. To help remedy this we have a weekly meeting via conference call to connect as a department. We spend part of our weekly meeting sharing ideas through rotating designer “presentations.” The presentations can be anything design related…in other words, anything goes! Through these meetings we’ve shared new product finds, discussed great articles, have been inspired through each other’s travels, and have even learned from each other’s mistakes. These short exchanges are just one way for us to seek and find creative inspiration everywhere.”
What is one characteristic you believe every manager should possess?
“To still be part of your department in any capacity. To me this means stepping in to help at any phase of a project. This could include doing counts for a bid, double checking specifications, cleaning the design library or ordering samples. When it comes to getting something done to meet a deadline I don’t think managers should be “telling,” I think they should be ‘doing.’”
What is one accomplishment you are most proud of?
“In 2008 I passed both my LEED AP exam and my NCIDQ on the first try…6 months apart from each other. I had a very rigorous study schedule that year…as well as two young boys at home. It sure felt good to put those exams behind me!”
